In some famous Chinatowns abroad, you can see red lanterns all the year round. In Chinese culture, the red lantern is the symbol of booming life and prosperous business, so they are always hung on important festivals such as Lantern Festival, Chinese New Year and Chinese National Day in parks or along main streets. Among these lanterns, red ones are recognized the most throughout the world. Bamboo was used to make frames but wire is used now, while the candles are replaced by bulbs. Their shapes were diverse, such as octagonal, hexagonal and even diametric. With dragon and phoenix patterns on them, these lanterns were not only used as lamps but also as decorations in palaces. Different kinds of patterns were drawn on the covers. Fine wood was used to make the frames that were covered in silk or glass when making palace lanterns. It is famous for the delicate craftsmanship, graceful and dignified pictures as well as the courtly features. It was mainly used in palaces in ancient time. Once used for lighting before the introduction of gas and then electricity, lanterns are now merely decorative or more significantly used during of the yearly Lantern Festival. From then on, lighting lanterns became popular in the country. During the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), people made lanterns to celebrate their peaceful life while the splendid illuminations symbolized and celebrated the prosperous, strong and powerful country. Later, this custom gradually became a grand festival among common people. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Emperor Liu Zhuang was a Buddhist and he ordered the inhabitants of the imperial palace and citizens to light lanterns to worship the Buddha just as the monks did. Originally, monks used lanterns on the twelfth day of the first lunar month in their worship of the Buddha. A variety of crafts were used in their making such as Chinese paintings, paper-cutting, and pricking and seaming and many kinds of materials such as bamboo, wood, wheat-straw and metal were used in their manufacture. Paper lanterns, originating from Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), mainly were used as lamps in ancient China.

Project or program type: Buyers have different preferences for different types of projects or programs. They want to see independent verification of the projects’ emissions reductions. Measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV): Buyers want to be sure that the credits they purchase are based on accurate measurement and verification of their underlying emissions reductions. They want to see clear and transparent information about the projects or programs, including how they are designed, implemented, and monitored. Project transparency: Buyers want to be able to trust that the projects or programs they are supporting are legitimate and effective. Both robust project transparency and MRV can provide more confidence in GHG impact: Buyers in almost all segments were unwilling to buy credits with low GHG impact scores, even at very low prices. Survey respondents across all market segments showed the highest willingness-to-pay for credits with higher GHG impact scores, representing higher levels of confidence in the GHG impact of the credit. GHG impact: Buyers want to be sure that the credits they purchase are actually reducing greenhouse gas emissions.Specifically, the study found that buyers prioritize the following attributes of carbon credit quality: The results are now in: the new study found that buyers across market segments are willing to pay significantly more for credits with demonstrably high quality. To better understand carbon credit buyer preferences, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), with contributions from EDF, surveyed nearly 500 company leaders in charge of voluntary carbon credit purchases for their companies. Understanding these preferences – and what shapes them – can help reveal pathways to a higher-quality voluntary carbon market, including by better directing carbon credit suppliers’ investments, as well as guiding interventions by standard setters and civil society organizations to where they are most needed. Between the recently released Core Carbon Principles from the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market, to the Claims Code of Practice from the Voluntary Carbon Market Initiative, we now have more guidance and insight than ever before to guide carbon crediting programs and project developers toward high quality and integrity.īut the question remains: are companies willing to spend more for higher-quality carbon credits, as they seek to credibly achieve their climate goals? Little research exists to quantify the preferences of carbon credit buyers themselves-which credit attributes they prefer, how much they are willing to pay for them, and which qualities they consider must-haves. The voluntary carbon market has been in a flurry in the past year to define integrity and quality for carbon credits. Historical events and politics Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings during the Norman Conquest Great Britain and Ireland The Crisis of the Late Middle Ages began at the start of the 14th century and marked the end of the period. In architecture, many of the most notable Gothic cathedrals were built or completed around this period. For much of this period, Constantinople remained Europe's most populous city, and Byzantine art reached a peak in the 12th century. The rediscovery of the works of Aristotle, at first indirectly through medieval Jewish and Islamic philosophy, led Maimonides, Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd, Thomas Aquinas and other thinkers of the period to expand Scholasticism, a combination of Judeo-Islamic and Catholic ideologies with the ancient philosophy. The age also saw the rise of ethnocentrism, which evolved later into modern national identities in most of Europe, the ascent of the great Italian city-states and the rise and fall of the Islamic civilization of Al-Andalus. The High Middle Ages produced many different forms of intellectual, spiritual and artistic works. The Christian kingdoms took much of the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim control, and the Normans conquered southern Italy, all part of the major population increases and the resettlement patterns of the era. The crusaders occupied the Holy Land and founded the Crusader States in the Levant. The Catholic Church, which reached the peak of its political power around then, called armies from across Europe to a series of Crusades against the Seljuk Turks. At the same time, settlers moved beyond the traditional boundaries of the Frankish Empire to new frontiers beyond the Elbe River, which tripled the size of Germany in the process. In what historian Charles Higounet called the "great clearances", Europeans cleared and cultivated some of the vast forests and marshes that lay across much of the continent. In the 11th century, populations north of the Alps began a more intensive settlement, targeting "new" lands, some areas of which had reverted to wilderness after the end of the Western Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire was reestablished in 1261 with the recapture of Constantinople from the Latins, though it was no longer a major power and would continue to falter through the 14th century, with remnants lasting until the mid 15th century. The powerful Byzantine Empire of the Macedonian and Komnenos dynasties gradually gave way to the resurrected Serbia and Bulgaria and to a successor crusader state (1204 to 1261), who continually fought each other until the end of the Latin Empire. With the brief exception of the Mongol invasions in the 13th century, major nomadic incursions ceased. The Magyars ceased their expansion in the 10th century, and by the year 1000, a Christian Kingdom of Hungary had become a recognized state in Central Europe that was forming alliances with regional powers. The Vikings settled in the British Isles, France and elsewhere, and Norse Christian kingdoms started developing in their Scandinavian homelands. The first universities started operating in Bologna, Oxford, Paris, Salamanca, Cambridge and Modena. The Carolingian Renaissance stimulated scientific and philosophical activity in Northern Europe. That trend faltered during the Late Middle Ages because of a series of calamities, most notably the Black Death, but also numerous wars as well as economic stagnation.įrom around 780, Europe saw the last of the barbarian invasions and became more socially and politically organized. By 1350, the robust population increase had greatly benefited the European economy, which reached levels that would not be seen again in some areas until the 19th century. Key historical trends of the High Middle Ages include the rapidly increasing population of Europe, which brought about great social and political change from the preceding era, and the Renaissance of the 12th century, including the first developments of rural exodus and urbanization. The High Middle Ages were preceded by the Early Middle Ages and were followed by the Late Middle Ages, which ended around AD 1500 (by historiographical convention). The High Middle Ages, or high medieval period, was the period of European history that lasted from AD 1000 to 1350. (Line and dot) Third Crusade of Richard I, Philip II, and Fredrick I.(Solid Line) Second Crusade of Louis VII and Conrad III. In a large bowl, add the sugars, vanilla, espresso powder, and cooled brown butter. You want to make sure the butter is still liquid when you’re adding it to the dough later on, so make sure to remove after 15 minutes. To help speed this process up, you can place in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. Give it a stir and add 2-3 tablespoons of cold water to the butter to bring it back up to 1 cup of liquid. Once the butter has turned a nice nutty brown, remove from the heat and pour into a liquid measuring cup to stop the cooking. It may become quite foamy and difficult to see, so keep a close eye on it. As this begins to happen, make sure to stir constantly so the butter browns evenly. As the water begins to boil out of the butter, the milk solids in the butter will separate, sink to the bottom, and begin to toast and brown. In a medium light-bottomed saucepan, add the butter and melt over medium heat.īring the butter to a boil, stirring occasionally. In a medium bowl, sift together the flours, salt, and baking soda. (Unless you want to let the cookies sit overnight in the fridge) :)Ģ teaspoons kosher salt or 1½ teaspoon table salt So, if you're a fan of salty cookies, go for the full two teaspoons.Īlso here's the link to Buzzfeed's video and recipe- but just so you don't have to click on another link, here is the full recipe written out below as well. Personally, I think this was a good choice because the cookies I tried seemed to have just the right balance of salt in them, but according to Caitlin, I should've added the extra salt and that would've made them just perfect for her. I also added half a teaspoon less salt than the recipe called for after reading a comment on the original video saying the normal amount was WAY too salty. All I wanted to do was just gobble down the raw dough, needless to say I was pretty excited to try them after they were baked off the next morning. Which turned out to be harder than I expected- the extra ingredients made this cookie dough even more deadly and tempting than other doughs. This is a way to develop more flavor in the dough- actually, it's a trick that many bakeries use, and since I wanted these cookies to be the best they could, I left them to sit overnight. I followed every step given, including the recommended but unnecessary step of leaving the cookies to sit in the fridge overnight. If you just want a quick and easy cookie, this certainly isn't the recipe for you. I would recommend trying making these if you're looking for something fancy- maybe to impress people, or maybe just to try a really good cookie. And all the extra steps do add up to a lot of extra time (which can be assumed, I suppose, because adding anything extra would obviously add extra time). While the browned butter makes the flavor go beyond average, it also takes an age to make. The recipe is definitely a lot more work than your average cookie recipe as well- such as the browned butter. The recipe is certainly better than your average cookie, due to the extra ingredients in it such as browned butter and espresso powder- they just add more layers of flavor that really make it a treat for your tongue. My favorite kind of cookie is the really crunchy sort- and while goey is good, I think crunchy is better. Would I say they're the best in the entire world? See, the difficult thing is that first off, they're not exactly my preferred type of cookie, and secondly I don't eat a lot of cookies therefore I can't exactly be the best judge of what the "best" is. They have a crunchy outside and a goey middle- which, for most, is what would be defined as the "perfect" cookie. The conclusion that I came to was that yes, these are in fact some spectacular cookies. Still, I tried it, and here are my results. Why? I'm not exactly sure, especially since Buzzfeed's "Perfect" Chocolate Cake recipe turned out to be such an epic failure. Nevertheless, when I came across Buzzfeed's "Perfect" Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, I felt a relentless urge to try it out. Now a days I'm not the biggest consumer of cookies- I find them boring to make and boring to eat. Then again, as a child I was more than happy to be given anything sweet. I, for one, have many memories of helping to measure flour and sugar, and then being told NOT to eat the cookie dough (and then eating it anyway). Chocolate chip cookies were a staple in most of our childhoods. "They even offered me to Sporting or Napoli. "Let's be honest, who is the most expensive salary player in the Premier League ever in history - it's me, even at 37 years old. 'Empathy with Ten Hag not good'ĭutch football expert Marcel van de Kraan explains that Erik ten Hag will come out stronger from the Cristiano Ronaldo situation In that game, eight players do the same but they only speak about the black sheep, which is me. On leaving before the end of Man Utd's pre-season game against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford in July, Ronaldo added: "Me and eight players, but they mentioned only my name. "If you don't have respect for me, I'm never going to have respect for you." He keeps saying in the press that he come to me, he like me blah, blah, blah. So this is why the relationship, it's in that way. I regret my team-mates know what I felt, and I apologised. "I apologised to my team-mates for the situation, I did a post - I regret leaving the stadium. For me it was not respect, this is why I take this decision I regret. "After what they keep saying before, that they respect me. "Don't tell me that the top players, the guys who want everything, the key players will play three minutes. I know what I can give to the teams.Ĭristiano Ronaldo seemed to be taken aback by the frosty reception he received from his Man Utd and Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes as they met for World Cup duty Credit: Portuguese FA "A coach to put me in three minutes in a game not allowed for me. "It's difficult to tell you 100 per cent but let's say I regret, but in the same way I felt provoked by the coach. "I will be honest with you, it's something that I regret, leaving the stadium. This is why probably, the game against Tottenham, I left. He doesn't respect the way I should deserve. I felt provoked not only because of that game, but before. "You don't put me on against Manchester City because of respect for my career and you want to put me on for three minutes against Tottenham? It doesn't make sense. On refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham in October after Ten Hag had not wanted to bring him on in the 6-3 defeat at Manchester City earlier that month: At that time he started looking for a new team, one that could compete in the UEFA Champions League, without success but now his departure seems obvious and imminent. Our pick of Cristiano Ronaldo's high and low moments since his return for his second spell at Manchester United From the rumors of the arrival of the German coach at Old Trafford, Cristiano Ronaldo heard that he would not play anymore. On the other hand, the changes did not stop there. With the arrival of Lisandro Martinez, English central defender Harry Maguire has moved to the bench. For example, the first thing he did was to change each of the Manchester United defenders, the only one left from last season is the Frenchman Raphael Varane. But no one ever thought what the scope of the former Ajax coach's ideas would be. Since Erik ten Hag arrived, it was clear that Manchester United would have a huge revolution. |
